A transcreation for these distressing times.

The nation is currently boiling in a cauldron of emotions : Fear, Anger, Rage, Distress, Sadness, Desperation, Despondency, Resignation laced, I daresay, some hesitant hope arising out the recent downturn in new cases.

Poets often dip their ladles into such pots, scoop out the feelings they see around them, and season them with their skill.

Another very emotional and sad time for the nation was also the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919. The nation had raged. And grieved, as it tried to come to grips with the event. But ultimately life continued. Spring came again. Baisakhi was celebrated again.

As will happen to us. This too shall pass. We will slowly emerge from our houses and deal with reality. The memory of these nightmarish times will gradually recede. Life will go on as it must. But we need to be gentle and empathetic.

Here's the famous, 'veer-ras' poetess Subhadra Kumari Chauhan's plea to Basant (Spring) on how it should approach this hallowed ground of Jallianwala Bagh, when it visits it year after year. There is a certain message here for us in the current crisis too.

I have attempted a transcreation into an English verse

(A transcreation is where a poem is translated into another poem keeping the meaning and essence of the original intact)

Here the crows caw, but no koels sing

An illusion of bees, black insects bring

Pierced with thorns, the buds are twinged

Those plants and flowers - dry or singed.

Pollen dust lies as unfragrant grains

Ah! This lovely garden with bloody stains

O, dear spring please be tranquil

This grieving place with silence fill

Make breeze here ever so gently blow

Leave sighs of sorrow, but when you go

Let koels sing, but mournful songs

With painful tales, bees buzz along

May flowers you bring be a duller hue

With muted fragrance wet with dew

Not as gifts, the feelings you show

With a silent prayer, do gently throw

For tender kids who have fallen here
Bring some buds and drop them here

Blown to bits with hopes in their heart

From folks and country, torn apart

A few blooming buds you must offer here

Honour them with drops of dewy tear

For the aged who fell in painful throes

Go and offer a few dry petals of rose

Do all this but here don’t make a sound

Tread very softly on this grieving ground
